Mount Olive Lutheran Church

Mount Olive offers many opportunities to become involved in fellowship, service and support. We seem especially fond of gathering around food and drink. Musical events and sometimes worship events—are often followed by receptions, such as the late-night spread after the Easter Vigil or the Scandinavian breakfast to celebrate Saint Lucia during Advent. Various groups sponsor luncheons, including the Mission Committee’s annual “Taste of …” event, which celebrates the work of the church in various countries and the ethnic cuisines enjoyed there. Perhaps our most important food event is the free “Community Meal” we serve to our neighbors once a month.

The following are some of Mount Olive’s most popular social and service organizations:

At Mount Olive, it’s no big deal to be straight or, for that matter, gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual. The big deal is to worship, to be a faithful disciple of Christ, to live out the Gospel message of grace and to share in the life of our community.

MOGAL is primarily a social organization of GLBT people and allies who have been drawn to Christian worship and welcomed at Mount Olive. The group meets for a meal and fellowship about once a month. Venues vary from homes to restaurants to the church fellowship hall, known as the undercroft. The group also attempts to be a point of contact for GLBT individuals who may be seeking a welcoming Christian community, or who are struggling with issues of faith and sexual identity.

Mount Olive is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a church body that allows parishes a measure of local autonomy on sexual identity issues. Mount Olive is also a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation, meaning that it affirms Christ’s “extravagant welcome” to all people and “full inclusion” into his church. Contact us for more information about MOGAL or email

Women are highly visible and valued in the congregation. The purpose of the women’s organization is to help women achieve their greatest potential and to grow in maturity as followers of Christ and servants of all people. Among the group’s goals: spiritual growth, reaching out to people in need, involving women in the global and local missions, encouraging hospitality to members and visitors, and serving in ways that meet the special needs of those in our parish, community and world.

Over the years, the Mount Olive Women have led a variety of ministries and projects, among them: maintaining a prayer chain and calling list; raising funds for kitchen equipment and the renovation of lawn and garden; serving at funerals; operating the flowers ministry, including the pascal garden at Easter; hosting the Novemberfest dinner, auction and program; holding Advent Teas; catering special events, and managing the Chapel-Lounge redecoration.

Planning meetings are held three times a year with other meetings designed around specific events. The Mount Olive Women are part the ELCA’s national and local women’s organizations. Contact us for more information about Mount Olive Women or email
