EXPLORING FAITH AND LIFE
Adult learners have a number of opportunities at Mount Olive. This Sunday morning discussion tackles a wide range of current topics. Outside speakers are often invited. How to offer affordable housing for those in need? How to resolve the church’s struggle with sexuality? How to find joy in simpler, less elaborate lifestyles? Those are a few of the things we’ve discussed in recent years. Adult Forum meets Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Chapel Lounge—or at 11 a.m. during the summer months. For topic suggestions, contact us.
Schedule of Adult Forums for Fall, 2016
The ELCA has urged parishes to “rediscover” reading and studying the Bible. Mount Olive responded by offering an in-depth probe into St. Matthew’s gospel. Further Bible study projects are anticipated. Currently, Bible Study on the lectionary readings for the coming Sunday meets every Tuesday at Noon (bring your own lunch), and Bible Study on a variety of themes meets on Thursday evenings at 6 pm. If you have questions, contact us.
Theological Study Group
A diverse gathering of readers and thinkers meets on the first Sunday of each month at noon to dig into hot topics in theology. Among recent discussions: Lee Snook’s What in the World Is God Doing? as well as works by Stanley Hauerwas and Robert Jenson. For further questions, contact us.
Mount Olive Book Group
The Book Group, begun in 2002, reads and discusses a range of fiction (and occasionally non-fiction) selected by group members. Recent examples: Wendell Berry’s Remembering, Ole Edvart Rølvaag’s Peder Victorious, Wallace Stegner’s Crossing to Safety, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night, Billie Letts’ Shoot the Moon, Ian McEwan’s Atonement, Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer, Khaled Hosseini’s Kite Runner, William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, and Jhumpa Lahiri’s Unaccustomed Earth. All are welcome. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in the Chapel-Lounge. Please contact us.
